Job Description:

The primary role of this position is to review and analyze personal lines insurance submissions and applications and renewal business within established underwriting guidelines and procedures for our Homeowner and Dwelling Fire books of business. Additionally, the senior underwriter will contribute to underwriting profitability by working with the Product and Marketing departments on special projects, agency management and profitability as the opportunity arises.

Your Duties and Responsibilities include the following and other duties may be assigned.
  • Determine acceptability of insurance risk for personal lines policy applications, endorsements, and renewals by analyzing property characteristics and identifying hazards as required to ensure profitable risk selection.
  • Assist agents in real time via phone calls, e-mails, etc. Demonstrate a sense of urgency around resolution, to keep the agent informed and follow up in a timely manner.
  • Ensure adherence to Personal Lines underwriting standards, objectives, and guidelines by processing policies in a timely and efficient manner to meet department production requirements, state regulatory requirements and agent expectations.
  • Advance underwriting mindset and creativity in analyzing risks.
  • Mentor to junior underwriting staff.
  • Subject matter expert on special projects.

Required Qualifications:

  • Detail oriented and ability to multi-task while meeting deadlines and achieving expected levels of quality and accuracy. Technical proficiency in underwriting/rating systems.
  • Advanced knowledge of underwriting concepts, practices, and procedures, as well as knowledge of personal insurance lines of business including product features, forms, regulatory environments, and risks.
  • Analytical and quantitative skills. Ability to exercise judgement, negotiate, and make sound decisions effectively.
  • Demonstrate technical expertise and product specific knowledge with experience in handling homeowner’s coverage.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree is preferred, or equivalent of education and business experience.
  • 6+ years of experience in personal lines underwriting – homeowner’s experience a plus.
  • Insurance licenses, CPCU or comparable designations preferred.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Excellent proficiency in MS Office Suite, specifically Excel, Word, and Outlook. Knowledge of other Microsoft programs a plus.
  • Strong process orientation, excellent interpersonal skills, and collaboration skills.
  • Ability to be creative and adaptable in a changing business environment.
  • Demonstrate ability to complete complex underwriting assignments.
  • Must have good verbal and written communication skills.
