Job Description:

The Underwriting Assistant provides timely and high-quality customer service to Underwriters and Agents by screening, pre-qualifying, rating and processing transactions for all commercial property lines. Under limited supervision uses advanced knowledge and skills to handle complex account work, solve problems, and provide technical support.

Your Duties and Responsibilities include the following and other duties may be assigned.
  • Support underwriting via the review of assigned referrals and underwriting inspections to determine acceptability in accordance with company guidelines.
  • Review property inspections in a timely manner for new business and/or renewals for property or liability concerns. Recommend action and notify UW or agency partners as necessary.
  • Retrieve documents required for binding policies and post-bind, from incoming emails and direct or indirect contact with agents via email, phone calls, or regular mail.
  • Screen transactions to determine proper processing. Complete transactions if within assigned authority or refer to underwriters those transactions that require their attention.
  • Ensure standards for timeliness are met; confirm data integrity for discounts, exposure base, etc.
  • Provide operational support. This includes all aspects of the processing flow, and policy transactions.
  • Verify data and perform technical tasks in the data processing function.
  • Develop underwriting mindset and creativity in analyzing risks.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • Education - Bachelor's degree, or equivalent of education and business experience
  • Experience - 2+ years of experience in personal lines underwriting – homeowner’s experience a plus. Continuing education courses preferred

Required Skills:

  • Detail oriented and ability to multi-task while meeting deadlines and achieving expected levels of quality and accuracy.
  • Technical competence in underwriting/rating systems.
  • Knowledge of insurance laws and procedures relating to underwriting and operational procedures is preferred.
  • Able to work independently and rely on instructions and pre-established guidelines and procedures to perform job functions.
  • Excellent proficiency in MS Office Suite, specifically Excel, Word and Outlook. Knowledge of other Microsoft programs a plus.
  • Must have good verbal and written communication skills.
  • A fast learner with excellent time management skills.
  • Strong process orientation, excellent interpersonal skills, and collaboration skills.

Physical Demands:

The physical demands are classified as Light.
  • Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit; use hands; and talk or hear.
  • The employee is required to stand; walk safely over uneven terrain or in confined spaced; and reach with hands and arms.
  • Must have the ability to handle stressful deadlines.
  • Must have sufficient vision to navigate required computer programs.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
