Job Description:

The Associate Actuary is responsible for leading the actuarial ratemaking function and providing analytical support for corporate-wide business activities and decisions.

Your Duties and Responsibilities include the following and other duties may be assigned.
  • Responsible for leading the ratemaking process, including rate indications, risk classification, rating plan design, and competitor analysis.
  • Collaborates with other functional areas to execute rate reviews and gain regulatory approval for rate filings.
  • Provides actuarial thought leadership by researching and advocating for applicable and appropriate techniques, methodologies, and best practices.
  • Creates a high performing team of engaged employees, including coaching and giving feedback, delegating and managing workflow, and monitoring and evaluating performance.
  • Supports corporate operational planning by producing premium and loss projections.
  • Prepares and works with outside firm on quarterly and annual federal income tax filings.
  • Provides technical and analytical assistance to other functional areas in support of corporate goals.
  • Continues professional development to maintain actuarial credentials.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • Education - Bachelor’s degree (B.A/B.S.) from a four-year college or university required – preferably in actuarial science, mathematics, statistics, economics, or a related field.
  • Experience - Minimum of 6 years of property/casualty actuarial experience.
  • Licenses/Designations - Associateship (ACAS) or Fellowship (FCAS) in the Casualty Actuarial Society required.

Required Skills:

  • Extensive knowledge of actuarial ratemaking techniques, especially for catastrophe-exposed personal and commercial property lines of business.
  • Thorough knowledge of reserving techniques and basic accounting principles.
  • Advanced knowledge of industry data sources and tools.
  • Solid history of working effectively with regulators.
  • Strong planning and decision-making skills.
  • Proven leadership skills and success managing employees.
  • Must have the ability to handle stressful deadlines.
  • Excellent communication skills, especially the ability to communicate technical information to a non-technical audience.
  • Demonstrated comfort building and leveraging business relationships with other functional areas.
  • Excellent proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Access and SQL.

Physical Demands:

The physical demands are classified as Light.
  • Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit; use hands; and talk or hear.
  • The employee is required to stand; walk safely over uneven terrain or in confined spaced; and reach with hands and arms.
  • Must have the ability to handle stressful deadlines.
  • Must have sufficient vision to navigate required computer programs.
